The solar-powered factory
In 2019, Massimo Della Marta directed the conservative restoration of an industrial building from the early 1960s, the current Expo production site in Rivoli.
In addition to respecting the architectural structure, the energy theme was the main challenge.
The safest and least expensive option was to maintain the existing system consisting of gas boilers and radiant panels, a system that emitted significant amounts of CO2 and particulate matter into the atmosphere.
Often the easiest and quickest path is not the best.
We started a journey of research and analysis, listening to often conflicting advice, but in the end we chose to do what had to be done, we said no to gas!
Thermal insulation of structures, floors, roofs and replacement of window frames. Perfect, now the box holds together! An underfloor heating system powered by electric heat pump units was the best choice at this point.
Since everything is powered by electricity, it was possible to analyse energy requirements and build a photovoltaic system with sufficient power to produce the electricity consumed annually in the factory.
Our production site has achieved the highest energy efficiency class, produces no CO2 emissions and all industrial activity is almost completely powered by self-generated solar energy.
